Hi all,
I need some suggestions. Ava has been eating solids for about 3 months. We started with jarred purees and then homemade veg/fruit/meat. Ava did well at first however she how knows she can keep her mouth closed if she doesn't want something and can raspberry food. She often gags on the homemade food so I have thinned it with jarred. She is getting pickier and pickier. She loves Greek yogurt with a little fruit mixed in and takes this no problem but anything else needs to be smooth or it's refused after a few bites. She is not a fan of the puree meat either hence the yogurt. She was nine months old yesterday. How do we get over the oral texture issue????? She is a very oral child and puts every toy, sock, stuffed animal, mommy's chin in her mouth.
Thanks,
Laura

this could just be a phase or she could be pulling one over on you. the fact that she was taking the food to begin with makes me think it's one of those two. you can always ask her OT for tips. i would just continue to offer the food and not make a huge deal out of it if she refuses. rachel always took our cues and loved getting a reaction out of us.

If he is tongue thrusting it out he may not be ready, but you can still keep trying.
If your daughter has been taking solids for 3 months, I think she's doing great. I would honestly not worry because to me it sounds like she is asserting her ability to make a choice of food, which is developmentally a great thing. Also, she may not be ready for thicker foods, and that is likely why she is gagging. I would just keep offering, and be glad she is taking something.

I don't blame her for refusing the jarred meat--have you ever tried that stuff--it is nasty LOL. I used to take the food we were eating, grind it up and mix in a little milk/formula to make it smooth and feed it to the baby. It sounds to me that she is doing pretty well.

Thanks for the input. She did better today however I offered everything cold (like the yogurt) and she seemed to do better. I will relax and just keep offering...she is a good size and takes her bottles well. Once again thanks:)

Asher eats about the same foods as a typically developing 9 month old will. He doesn't have any sensory issues, he just was never taught to chew. He eats everything we do, I just puree it and thin with liquid (usually water) to just slightly more texture than apple sauce. For him it can't be sticky at all or he just packs it into his palate. His food needs to be pretty slippery for him to figure out what to do with it.
