I highly recommend the film, "The Teachings of Jon," by his sister Jennifer Owensby. The film chronicles the life of Jon Turner, a fortysomething man with DS. Born in 1960, Jon was institutionalized (as was typical at that time) for seven years before coming home to live with his family. He is unable to speak and is dependent on his parents. His limitations fall in the severe range of prospects for people with DS. Yet he is a thoroughly charming, loveable individual. He stole my heart. I'm sure I won't be the only "victim," either!
I was deeply touched by the story of Jon and his family. I learned much from their experience and felt better prepared to face the unknown in my own life. I hope that my family will be as loving and accepting of my son Thomas as Jon's family is of him.
More info about Jon and his family, as well as the film's television airtime schedule (on PBS in the United States) and purchasing information, can be found at http://www.teachingsofjon.com
If you're interested in my personal reaction to the film, feel free to read my letter of appreciation to Jennifer Owensby, posted on my personal blog:
