I think I'd like to start TNI, but I have a few questions. Erin has a VSD and will most likely require surgery sometime this late summer/early fall. In an effort to gain weight (Erin that is, not me ), I'm adding 3/4 t formula per oz of breastmilk. Since Erin seems to have a fairly constant sticky eye drainage and nose stuffiness, my hope is that maybe the TNI could help hold off some of these colds. It's possible it is allergies as well. My hesitation is...she is already receiving a full supply of nutrients with breastmilk. In addition, she has the added formula. Do you think that adding the TNI (I have MSB samples sitting in my cupboard) would be over kill with some of these vitamins and minerals? Thanks! Kris

Hi Kris, when Kayla was little she had bad reflux so I had to add formula to her breast milk, too. She started on MSB+ at 3 months (I just added it to her bottles) and she did well on it. Rarely had any colds or ear infections until she started preschool. If you have a concern about Erin getting too many vitamins & stuff, you could always ask your ped for blood tests every few months or so. My only problem w/MSB+ has been that it makes her stools pretty loose, so we tend to go off it and take a break after a few months.

Drake started Nutrivene when he was 2mos. He wasn't on breastmilk as I couldn't. BUT, the formula he was on should closely mimick it inasmuch as the vitamins, etc. My only concern was giving him the capsulized DHA as the formula contained that, so I didn't. Not sure how the Nutrivene will hold up next to the natrual enzymes in the breast milk. This is something that you can call the people at Nutrivene about. The are very helpful and knowledgeable and will spend time to answer all of your questions and address your concerns. As far as health....I swear by it. I used to think it may be a coincidence but the times Drake has ran out of the vitamin, the last two times for a week each because of my irresponsibility, he came down with pneumonia. All the way down to the color of his skin improves when the vitamins get back in. I'd give it a shot.
Oh, and Drake still had the unrepaired VSD and ASD when he started the vitamins. When he had surgery at 5mos, I went so far as to take the vitamins to the hospital so he'd still get them....I can't remember though if they let me give them to him then or not. It's been so long. I can't remember if I gave them to him immediately after surgery...my memory is terrible, he was on lasix and baby aspirin...I might not have for those first two weeks after, but he did take it up until surgery date.

I have read recently that you are suppose to stop the vitamins for an amount of time before surgery because it can cause excess bleeding. I don't remember the exact amount of time but I am sure the company would know. I didn't know this and didn't stop them before Justin's heart catherization and he did bleed badly afterwards.
Justin has been on TNI since about a week old and been very healthy--nothing more serious then some colds and flus which he has gotten over quickly. He is also breastfed.

EEk, that's interesting about the bleeding. Definitely check on that. Drake had the full open-heart surgery and didn't have any excess bleeding. His was a "perfect" surgery and he was home two days later. But YIKES, looks like we dodged a bullet.

Thank you thank you!! I never would have known to check into this for bleeding issues. I just got off the phone with the MSB+ people. They do recommend that I wait till after her surgery to start it. Then, start very small (1/4 scoop). Erin weighs just over 9 lbs, and they said that was still too small to start due to immature digestive system. I'm glad I called. Kris

I know it's been awhile since this post, but I was just curious to know, how old was erin when she was given the TNI, and how has it worked for you?

Kathy,
First of all PJ is beautiful. Congratulations on the birth of your little guy!
Yes, it has been awhile since I posted this! It was interesting for me to reread what I wrote, because I had forgotten about Erin's stuffy nose she had every morning when she was that age. It was only in the morning (so it wasn't a cold) and it has completely disappeared, so it wasn't allergies. I guess the stuffiness was a mystery.
We started with MSB+ when Erin was about three or four months old. The we stopped for the whole month of September, when she had her open-heart surgery, cause I was worried about it possibly interfering with that. She's been on it again now for a couple weeks. She's doing great. She's never had a cold, a flu, or an ear infection....just heart failure Erin is also still exclusively on breast milk, which of course also helps to boost the immune system.
At this age, the TNI is still quite inexpensive. We will continue on it as long as we think it can help to keep her healthy, or until we cannot justify the cost. I look at it as one piece of her overall therapy and well-being, even if it is only a small piece.
Thanks for asking!
Kris
