My oldest nephew John and his wife Katie are 12-weeks pregnant with their first babies. They just found out they're expecting twins, but there are complications. The identical twins are monoamniotic twins, meaning they share one sac.

I'm not sure how much you know about monoamniotic twins, but they are very very high risk! Since they share one sac but have two umbilical cords, they are at a great risk of their cords becoming entangled or compressed and they're at risk for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, meaning that one of the babies takes all the nutrients. The risk is very great and very real to both babies.

The best case scenario is that they make it to 34 weeks, they induce Katie and the babies are born alive and healthy and spend several weeks in the NICU. The worst case scenario is that one or both babies die. The mortality rate is 50%.

John and Katie are 29 years old and are very good people who have been through FAR more than their fair share in their lives. John lost his mom (my sister) to uterine cancer when he had just turned 18. Oddly and coincidentally, Katie's mom is currently fighting uterine cancer. They've been through so much in their short lives and they're thrilled yet terrified right now. Please pray for these babies! Thank you!

They found out today (Katie's 30th birthday) that they lost both twins.

I am so sad for them. Sad

Thanks, guys.

They're having a tough time. They found out the twins were girls.

Katie had to spend an extra couple of days in the hospital because she started running a fever and needed a few rounds of IV antibiotics.

She's home now and they're just lying low.
