Update on my Dad Sean!

Just wanted to share a bit about my Dad Sean.....

A year ago I asked for prayers for my dad Sean.
He was 75 years old, hadn't seen a doctor in 60 years and was diagnosed with heart failure and needing surgery to replace the mitre value on his heart.

The night before the op the doctors refused to give him the surgery cos they noticed a shadow or spot on his lungs. The surgeon suspected cancer. My dad insisted that he would 'take his chances' and had the surgery the following day.

He spent 20 days in hospital. He discharged himself against doctors advice on day 9 ( don't ask), spent 4 days at home where he nearly died, and another 9 days back in hospital till he was in full recovery and able to manage at home. He came home on Christmas Eve.

Over the summer my dad saw the heart surgeon. He is very happy with his recovery. My dads heart is fixed now!

My dad also had extensive monthly scans to investigate the 'shadow' on his lungs. He was too sick to do a lung biopsy, so they used MRI scans to monitor the shadow. A few weeks ago he was told its not cancer, probable a pocket of infection after the heart surgery.

My dad asked me to advocate and support him with the medical stuff. He knew I had 'served my apprenticeship' in the medical system advocating for Robert and my twin sister who had breast cancer a few years ago.
It's been a privilege to help him, to be with him at all appointments and treatments and through the surgery and hospital stay. We have spent a lot of time together, getting to know each other again.

I have come to know and admire my dad. He has been through so much, showed great courage and never complained. Considering his pathological fear of the medical system I am in awe of him and love him dearly!

Through my dads illness we have a deeper understand of each other and re-establish our relationship which if I am honest was not that good prior to his illness. I feel my dads illness have been like a wonderful gift to me. I have come to love him dearly and am at peace inside myself.

So its all good news for my Dad.
I want to thank to all for the prayers, words of support, and kindness.

Linda, I am so glad that you and your dad have come to understand each other better. I'm sure that will make any final parting more fulfilling, if that makes sense.
It sounds like you have both been very brave, medically and in your personal relationship. Good for you.

Awesome update! So great to hear that he is doing well and that the two of you have become closer. Glad you could be there for him when he needed an advocate.

That's wonderful to hear Linda. He is so lucky to have a great daughter like you. I'm so happy to hear you will have more time with him. I lost my dad suddenly 24 years ago when he was only 59 and we had just started having a decent relationship. I wish we had more time.

Men are so stubborn. 60 years without seeing a doctor? Wow! lol

Thanks for this update, Linda. I was wondering how he was doing! Don't know how I missed it but better late than never.
