Ok, Avery has continued to have trouble with her BM's. We have not tried a whole lot. So far just a couple different types of juices. The geneticist said to try Flax seed oil. He didn't state how much or anything. just that it has a "fishy flavor". Well, we bought the gel tablets and it said one tablet two or three times a day. So far I gave her only one tablet once, She took it fine in applesauce with a bit of sugar. I am wondering if anyone has tried this or other laxatives etc. for constipation. We are beyond the juice thing though, so whats next? I know there have been many threads about constipation, but it seems they are for younger babies and nothing about Flax or Laxatives. Sorry if there is some redundancy, I could have missed the perfect thread about this.

Hannah suffered constipation really bad

we too were told to try flax seed oil and we put it in her cereals and it did seem to help. It also contains omega 3 which is meant to help stimulate active brain development

However once she seemed to be abit more regular we don't give it now ( we just give her Omega 3 seperately )

natural things we tried were

"p" fruits, ie pears, peaches prunes
tried to get her to drink as much as possible ( we found that the hardest )
sucking on icelollies
eating jelly ( or jello I think it may be called in the US )

We did get some laxatives once from the doctor but we found she either had an explosion and it ran everywhere or nothing happened. We were also told that they can become to reliant upon laxatives and that laxatives don't actually help constipation, they only soften the stools so they can get it out easier!!

keep us updated

Interesting. We haven't had to try that, but am interested in how it goes. When Abby was very small we gave her prune juice and then switched back and forth with pear juice. There were at times we had to give some suppositories, not fun, but they worked.

Hope for the best for you.

We have been using the "Dr. Leichtman constipation recipe" and it works great. Eliza has gone from 2 BM's a week to one a day. Pureed prunes with flax seed oil (I get the bottle in the refriderated section at a health food store), and grown flax seeds (keep in freezer to keep longer). I don't have exact measurements but eyeball about a teaspoon of the oil and seeds. Eliza really likes it but then again she hasn't met a food yet that she doesn't like.

Ok, that sounds interesting. Something I might try. Dr. Leichtman said Flax seed oil and nothing about the seeds or dosage or anything. I am a bit at a loss. Avery has had two capsules in the last two days and nothing so far. So you puree prunes (how much) and a teaspoon each of the oil and the seeds or a teaspoon combined. I have never seen just flax seed. Are they small enough to swallow? I feel like an idiot! I have no idea what I'm doing. More info please.

With Callm we bought the bottle of flax oil and did 1 teaspoon per day mixed with apple sauce (he was bout 12 months at the time), it did seem to help.
