Just curious if others have experienced this. Nicholas really doesn't do well in crowds of people. Family dinners, Derek's games, etc. We had to leave church half way through this morning because he was having a meltdown and just disruptive to everyone else there. He turns 3 next month, which means school! I'm wondering if he'll be the same way there. I'm getting a little nervous about it. Did anyone else's kids have problems with crowds? And if so, how did it go when they started school?

My husband had a really hard time when he went to nursery school. So much so that his mom didn't make him go. He went to kindergarten the next year and he did fine. Some kids just take a little more time. You may need to wait a year or so that he's a little more mature. And he maybe ok by September.

Hannah has had major issues with this. I really believe its a sensory overload kind of thing. She used to cry and act like a monster through every family gathering.I finally realized the noise and chaos are too much for her.The good news is as she has gotten older it has lessoned some.Wenow can realize when she is getting overwhelmed and can do things like take her to a quieter area or cover her ears for a while. As far as school goes, hannah had issues when some of the kids would scream but we let the teachers know it was an issue and they would try to help her.Any school that has special needs students should understand this and if its a mainstreamed school you should try to explain this issue to them.He may seem distruptive to others but it's because he's upset by his surroundings.

That's a good point Heather. A friend of mine has a daughter with sensory issue to sound. Even now at age 13 she wears cotton in her ears when they to places where the noise is really loud like concerts.

Yes, I've always thought it was a sensory thing, and that he truly can't help being bothered by the noise/stimulation. Certain noises bother him, too, like vacuums, drills, etc. And he has gotten better with certain things, I was just kind of wondering if anyone has had a child that really didn't do well in school because of this, and what they did to help them, or if they had to get used to it/outgrow it...

I don't even know for a fact that school will bother him, he may love it for all I know! Just a mother's worry and paranoia getting the best of me as that birthday creeps closer!

As part of Callum's pre school evaluations we had to complete a sensory questionaire which had a section about how childrens reaction to noise and crowds. Your school district will hopefully do something similar so that they can identify all the areas that he will need help with.

Callum is fine with crowds and noise, his sensort thing is putting stuff in his mouth and he's constantly chewing on his finger.
