I NOW know how our kids feel when they have hearing loss!!

I have had a lot of sickness in our house for the month of February.

Robert had a viral infection along with a bacterial infection. Then he got another viral infection.
Hannah had a viral infection with pain in her ear.

And along with sick kids, both myself and John are sick. On Friday eleven days after feeling unwell I went to the doctor, so did my hubbie. We both have several viral infections along with bacterial infections that have affected us in different ways.

John had a bad infection in his synsus. He was given a double dose of antibiotics, a nasel spray, cough bottle and paracetemal three times a day. Bed rest with hot drinks, his heart rate is very high, no excertion till he's better.

I have no infection in my synsus but I have lost my hearing in my right ear. Doc was worried about that, and he wants to see me next Friday to ensure my hearing has returned. I too have a double dose of anitbiotics, ear drops, cough bottle and paracetamol three times a day.

I bet your wondering why I waited so long to go to the doc. I kept thinking I'll be better tomorrow, until last Friday I'd had enough and felt I was going down hill instead of improving and I had to seek medical help.

We have both taken the docs advice, day four of the antibiotic, and ear drops and no improvement in my hearing. Infact, I have had more pain since I started using the ear drops.

So here's my question......

Has anyone lost there hearing as a result of a virus/ cold.? Did your hearing return to normal once you got better?

Tom any chance you could put a little check box on my profile and mark it hypo-chondriac! That was John's suggestion. Glad to say he hasn't lost his sense of humour, yet!

When I get a cold, the first thing to go is my ears. It usually takes me several weeks for my hearing to return to normal. This is usually due to swelling of the eustacian tube (drains down into the throat) that causes fluid to stay stuck in the middle ear. When you have this vacuum going on, your ear drum looks like a drum that is being sucked in, and doesn't move well. When you plug your nose and blow, this usually opens the eustacian tube and thus your eardrum is able to move again. However I am not able to do this, as I have meniers disease and trying to pop my ears will put me into what feels like a mega-gravity spinning room. I'll find myself on the floor, violently ill because of the world spinning around me.

So...I don't pop me ears. I take sudafed, which only sometimes helps. I have the same problem when I fly. I've been on the ground for a week and my hearing is still not back to normal, and now I have to fly again tomorrow. I'm not looking forward to it!!!!

meniers disease

Leah I never heard of that one.... I'll google that later.

Funny last week when I blew my nose I felt my hearing pop and I could hear things better for a short while. No spinning like you described.

But I have had a problem on and off with what I thought was vertigo since last summer. Your posting made me think it might be something else.

I have bouts of dizziness when I get up from bed, room spinning and I just feel unwell. During my first episode my doc gave me stemitol, travel sickness pills. I only had one bout when I felt violentely ill, other situation have been a lot milder.
I had these feelings of sickness last week and just thought I had a virus.
I'm off to look up Meniers disease.
Thanks Leah for the response.

Leah!!!! OMG!!!! Aaron has Meniers disease. Well he does, then he doesn't depends on which doctor. You probably know that it is nearly impossible to diagnose. The problem with Aaron's is that the "Spells" were constant for nearly a year. Stress makes it worse, so when Mya was born, the poor guy had to crawl from room to room. He can function pretty normally now, but he still has spells, sometimes they last a few hours, but sometimes he can shake them quickly. I wish they could have diagnosed him, but they never really have. He has even had surgery to chip away some bone to make more room for his inner ear when it swells...nice huh? Anyway, I don't think I have ever really run into anyone who actually has it.

My mom has it too. Hers is worse than mine (as far as how frequently she has an episode and how long they last) But I have definite triggers! Like flying....any type of sinus congestion can trigger an episode too. Typically if I do have one, I can take dramamine and by mornining I'm past the worste of it. But when they hit. OMG...standing up is just not possible! Its like someone has an ancor around your head pulling you to the ground, and the vision thing really is bad. I just close my eyes and hang onto whatever I'm laying on to keep my grounded.

My moms WAS diagnosed about 15 years ago by a meniers specialist at Mayo Clinic. It was horrible...they have to trigger an episode to confirm the diagnosis. If I remember right it involved having warm water shot into her ear for several minutes, then the chair (like a dentist chair) she was in was spun around a couple of times. Trouble is there is no telling how long the episode will last when they do it. Her's lasted over a week.

I remember Aaron having some tests too, but don't remember what they were. He has tried the dramamine, but that makes his worse, infact any medication they gave him made it worse. Basically anything that makes him tired, or stressed triggers it. He gets it when he has any kind of congestion too. I am proud of how he is handling it now. It used to defeat him, but now he does not let that happen. He deals with it, and moves on. He used to miss every family function, but now he is always with us. When they get internet again, I should hook you guys up. He has talked to only one other person who had meneirs, and that was one of the doctors, and he is the one who told him he did not have it....hmmmm....

I had to get tubes as an adult because I always had fluid in my ears. It really affected by hearing until I got the tubes and then it was instant relief. I could not believe the difference. Did the Dr. say if there was fluid on that ear? If so that could be why you are not hearing.

Sally

I checked menier disease on google. Very interesting but I hope to God I don't end up with that. Seems so dibilating....how do you cope Leah and Aaron?

Since last summer I had a bout of what my doc described as vertigo. I had lots of spining in my head, almost go sick and found it hurt my eyes. I had to rest alot.

The first incidence happened when the temperatures went up very quickly here. I understood it was related to a virus, but perhaps it's a mild version of Meniers disease? I don't think it was Meniers disease cos my sister and a close friend also were sick just like me.

I had a few more minor bouts over the winter, nothing like the first one. It seems worse in the morning and as the day goes on I get better. I don't take medication for it.

And now this viral infection with hearing loss. Carsons' Mom there is no fluid there. Doc said he sees 'soars'? He also asked if I had a dischaged from the ear, which I didn't. He said it's an infection (I presume soars) on the hearing nerve. I don't think he could see the nerve.

He said we need to attack the infection of two fronts, both orally and with drops. He's given me Gentamicin drops.

Today is the last day of the oral anitbiotics. Hearing still hasn't returned but I am hearing 'poping' in the ear which wasn't there earlier in the week. I am back to the doc tomorrow.

It's awful having hearing loss. I have never had any kind of hearing problem in my life before this.

Thanks for responding and sorry for sounding like a moan. Reading all the post of the sick kiddies here makes my problems seem insignificant.

The popping you're hearing means your eustacian tube is starting to open, and the drum is starting to move some. A couple more days ans you should be back to normal.

Lots of people have problems with vertigo when they have an cold. It's because the middle ear gets messed up with the pressure caused from inflamation.

Just an quick update ....

The Gentamicin drop have coated my ear drum and all the infection/ swelling has gone. Still not hearing yet but the doc is confident it will return next week. If it doesn't return by this day next week I have to go back to him.

John is now up and back on his feet.

So I hope that's us done with adult sickness for a few years!!!

Carson'smom .... what's your name? I don't like calling you Carson'smom, much prefer to use your first name.

Carson'smom and Tara

Thanks for the good wishes.
It's Monday morning and I'm still deaf, but feeling a lot better. Keeping all fingers and toes crossed that my hearing returnes this week.

The flue shots are a good idea Tara, but I don't think they work against virus, but you know anything is better than how we have both felt in the last few weeks. I am praying this bout of sickness is behind us all now.

I'll post when my hearing is back, infact I think you'll be able hear me shout with glee from where ever you are in the world...
