My five month old has not had cereal yet and I was wondering when you guys introduced solids. Kyle does not have the greatest head control(but its alot better than it use to be ) and did not know if I should wait longer. My peditrician said that by six months I should have him on cereal. Just wanted to know what worked for all of you. Thanks!

Wow..he has such gorgeous eyes...I was so busy staring at them...I forgot what the question was!! LOL

We started cereal at 4 months. Daniel had very good head control at that point and he didn't have any problems with feeding. Just to be on the safe side, I fed him cereal for the first time during our OT visit. Our OT is also a feeding specialist so she observed him eat and his lip closure was good, he didn't choke...so we figured he was ready. I started off slow...but now at 9 months, he is a great eater. We are now transitioning to regular table food....it's a slow process...but we have begun.

We started solids at 6 months. Kait didn't have great head control either so I used the car seat or the bouncy seat in fact it is still how I feed her.

Our ped wanted me to wait until 6 months for solids. He said that formula had more calories than cereal and baby food, and wanted me to continue putting some weight on the kid. I , however, talked him into experimenting with cereal at 4 months (which meant that I started him on cereal at 4 months) because I was anxious to get some solids into the kid. Alex didn't have the best head control, but we got a high chair with a seat that would recline slightly.

We started Brock on cereal at 4 months but continued all of his bottle feedings (generally 5 a day of 6 - 8 oz). We now do cereal every day and are working our way to 3 meals a day. However, that said, Brock prefers his bottle and we usually try to scoop food in between sips on the bottle. We've been trying soft table foods which he seems to like better than the jar food. Good luck!

Listen to your doctor. There is no benefit to starting solids before 6 months. That is a proven fact. My typical son did not have solids before 7-8 months. Larkin is on breast milk with formula supplement.

It's US that are in a hurry to begin food. Larkin always has time to begin eating solid food. She has a giant appetite but she is getting all that she needs for now.

As long as your baby is growing and gaining weight then that is all that you need to do.

Then again...it's all in what a parent decideds to do. Go with your gut.

My typical boy didn't have solids until he was 12 months old, he just loved those breastfeeds and wasn't interested in anything else! My typical now 9 year old started on solids at 3 months and loved them.

I have tried solids with Talitha (now 4 months) and she can swallow but hasn't really taken to them. She is tube fed a combination of breastmilk and formula so even swallowing is an achievement.

I would say do what you want to do and what you think is best for Kyle. He won't suffer if you wait and he'll be fine if you don't!

My oldest non-DS child started soilds at 4 months because he was always hungary and he seamed to need more food. My middle child (non-DS) started soilds at 5 months and Anthony DS started soilds one week after birth. Anthony needs his milk thicken so we use rice cearl. If you son seams like he is getting enough food I would go with what your doctor said and start soilds at six months. Bonnie

I started her on Cereal at 4 mth right after her surgery and at 5 mth started on baby food. Alexis loves to eat and I am so glad because she is so small from not being able to eat good before her surgery. She loves her food and will sit up in the high chair and yell is you dont sit down next to her and feed her. She is just to funny. We started calling her piglet.

Our ped said DJ could have up to 32 oz of formula a day. When he wanted MORE than that, we started cereal - he was 4 months old. His head control was ok at 4 months, but we have a 3 position high chair with built in wings to keep the baby's head from flopping around - it works GREAT.

Now of course, at 12 months, he sits straight up and eats EVERYTHING - if I have it HE wants it (he likes Mountain Dew.....) He eats 3 meals a day with an 8 oz bottle at each.

Of course, DJ is a MOOSE - just ask anyone who held him at Chuck E Cheese!

Is your baby showing signs that he isn't getting enough? Is he waking at night hungry? Is he looking for more between bottle feeds? Is he sucking each bottle dry, looking for more? Perhaps you are breast feeding?

I guess what I am trying to say is take your cue from Kyle.

Remember every child is different. With Robert I started him I think too early. He was so small I felt the need to fatten him up. I started around month five.

I also kept Robert on a gluten free food until he was over the year. My mum has coelic disease and it can be passed on. At a year I had him tested and he was fine.

Having said that he just loves food now and I have had no issues around feeding with him.

For the head/ body control, I wraped two large towels and placed them either side of Robert to wedge him into the baby seat. This gave him side support.
I then used the table top to support him at the front.
And finally I got an piece of anti slip fabric and put that on his seat. That prevented him from slipping down during the feed.
He was so tiny his head didn't come anyway near the top of seat. LOL ... the things you forget.

Let's know how you get on.

PS What handsome boys you have! Congratulations...

Megan was never really interested in her bottle, but we started foods at about 5 months.

Olivia is a different story...she loves her milk and does not want food at all. It is a struggle, so I just give her more formula.

All kids are different DS or not. If he doesn't take to it, he is not ready...I agree, go with your gut!
