Has anyone used an abdominal binder for your Ds child on recommendation of a physical therapist? Yesterday I attended my local Ds parents group and therapists from our local children's hospital presented to us on the issue of trunk control and use of abdominal binders. About 2 years ago the therapy team from our hospital attended a training presented by Mary Massery PhD and a PT. Any way, the focus of the discussion was on the use of an abdominal binder for babies/kids with Ds starting at 6 months. The therapists have been working with some of the kids in our group for 16 months and have seen a lot of results in terms of breathing and posture. I was just wondering if any of you have used an abdominal binder or heard of them?

Yes our PT got hip huggers and theretogs for Eliza. We call them the girdle and corset and apparently we are the only ones. Anyway we started with the hip helpers because Eliza was complaining a lot about the abdominal vest so our PT wanted to hold off for now. She gets them for all her clients with developmental delays as she believes it also helps in body awareness.

We've used theratogs on and off with Anna for about a year. It does seem to give her some body awareness and some stability when it comes to walking. They are rather expensive ( a couple hundred dollars for theratog brand) but our PT has been able to loan us some.

We use two things- We have the hip huggers, and also something called a Benick vest. (not to be confused with a weighted vest)
The vest works better than anything I have tried- and I have every product, taken all advice, etc...
Ask your PT about a Benick vest. They will custom measure it to fit your child. In the meantime, check out http://www.benik.com
