OK. Now that I am going to be a SAHM starting on the 1st of April I need to start cutting back and saving money.

I also need to start a schedule for the kids.

Mind you this is my 1st attempt at this new job so all the help anyone could offer would be GREAT!

All you SAHM's please post your schedules. How do you schedule therapy so that it doesn't ruin your whole week and cut things short.

Also post recipes, grocery shopping tips, ANYTHING that will help. THANKS!!!

Stephanie you are going to love being home!! As far as scheduling..since I have the daycare..I have to stay home everyday until 3:30 when the kids leave...but I do have a few suggestions.

I always schedule therapy for the same time of day..usually 3:30. So when other things come up...I always know 3:30 is reserved for therapy and I don't double book myself anywhere.

Also, for shopping....I usually do a big shopping on Sundays. The more things I have on hand...the better off I am. Elayna likes lots of vegs...so I usually boil vegs and keep them in the fridge...so I have side dishes for lunches on hand and ready. I also keep a bowl of fresh fruit on the table and just let her choose what she wants. The more prepared you are, the better off you will be. I keep lunches simple. Sometimes a fruit and cheese plate with a yogert, grilled cheese, pbj or pasta.

When I am home during the week with daycare and my kids....I try and have as much routine as possible. Usually in the morning we do something crafty...have some music and dancing time....then we all eat together...then they all nap together. Routine routine routine is the best advice. Also, try and schedule your outdoor things for certain days. Don't overbook yourself so you are running around all different places. Try at least one outing per day....but sometimes we don't leave the house. I just make sure we go for a walk or play outside if we don't get to go anywhere on a particular day.

As far as activities.....check with your library for story hours, our local zoo also has activities for small children. Even just a trip to the mall is an adventure for kids!!

I actually keep a calendar of appointments. We aren't really too overloaded with therapy at this point...but with 2 kids, therapy and docs appts...it can get confusing..I just keep a calendar and don't book anything unless I am looking at the calendar.

You are going to love being home!! How many more days do you have left of work? Let me know if I can help in anyway!! We do lots of crafty things...painting is very big at our house. Also, the color wonder markers are great. They only color on the magic paper...so they can't draw all over the table and walls.

Good luck...hope some of my suggestions are useful and like I said...if you can think of anything else I can help with....you know where to find me!!

You will do great & enjoy it.

I start at night by getting the boys clothes set out for the next morning. I get up at 7:00am & shower then get them up at 7:30am. We are out the door by 8:15am. I drop Patrick off & then Kyle, Kyle comes home on the bus & Patrick gets out at 11:15am.

When Kyle had therapy I would schedule it in the morning when Patrick was at school.

I go to the store usually on Sunday's since my DH can watch the kids. If I need something I go after I drop the boys off. so then I just have Cameron. I have taken all three, I need a drink after that.

I keep the freezer stocked with things I can pop in the oven. The boys like grilled cheese & PB&J and then a variety of snack packs.

For dinner I take stuff (any meats) out of the freezer on Sunday for the week ahead. I plan my meals for the week, at least I try to. We like, tacos, any pasta dishes, pizza, turkey loaf or whatever I can throw together.

I agree with Lisa we have fruit & veggies so Patrick can get them himself.

You will get a routine once you have worked through a few days.

HOORAY for you for being able to stay home! (didn't you just go back to work?)

One thing I did was keep one day a week "Therapy and Dr. appointment free". Weds was our day. In the summertime I did "Adventure Weds" with my kids. They didn't know where we were going till we got there. Ok, that's mostly because I didn't always know where we were going either! LOL I'd pack a picnic lunch and we'd go to a new park we'd never played at before, or to the airport to watch the planes land, etc. It was always inexpensive stuff because we were dirt poor. When Angela was very little I left her with a sitter so my boys could get more of my attention.

I learned the hard way to never ever ever say yes to anything unless my calendar was right in front of me and I had a pen in my hand.

Wow...you guys are great...all really good suggestions and ones I am making mental notes of.

Leah, I just gave my notice on Friday and yes I just went back in January, but I did have the intentions of staying at home after March. My 5 year anniversary with the company was this month...so now that I am vested I can go back when the girls are in school, which is nice to know.

I think after the girls are in school I just might want to loungue around eatting bon bons like Peg Bundy ...I mean I think I will deserve it with my 2 lil' devils Don't let those cute faces fool ya!

Well I did something last January 1st that helps with saving money. Now this is funny but it WORKED. I cannot save money for the life of me. If it's in the account and I know it's there, it's MINE. I'm so bad. Well I decided to save a little stash for myself. So I took a can that Doritos come in and glued the lid on and made a slit in the top. I saved every $5.00 bill that I had. When I'd get change back, and would get a 5, it would go in the can. I'd get them and stick them in the back of my wallet and promise myself NOT to spend them. I'd trade the girl's their 5's for 5 ones. I did this all year and on New Year's eve this year I counted all my 5's. I'm telling you that you do not even REALIZE that you are saving money, because you don't really miss a 5 if you hurry and stash it away. My grand total for 1 year $1,370.00. Not bad, huh? I started again this year and am gonna try to beat my record. I haven't done a thing with the money, and it will be hard to spend those 5's, because I cherished them all year!!!!

Vonda, I do something similar with change, but I am likin' the $5 idea....WOW...that is awesome...you should open an account for yourself and earn some interest. Those orange savings accounts are lookin' pretty good! Then you'll have enough to go to the Keys again.

Stephanie, congrats on your big move. I think the biggest way you can save money and your sanity is to cook at home and plan the meals. Sit down and write a list of every meal you cook. Each week when you get your grocery store ads, actually plan what you are going to cook for dinner that week based upon your meal list and what is on sale. If there is a good sale on something like meat, make sure you stock up on it but wrap it well for the freezer and mark it with the date you bought it. Make out your grocery store list based upon your meal plans and any extra things you might need and then only buy what is on the list. Don't take the kids with you to the store because they will want stuff and take your mind off what you are doing. Cooking from scratch is much more economical than prepared foods so try to cook all your meals--I double recipes, put the extra in the freezer for later meals, and use the crock pot a lot. I also use leftovers from dinner for lunch for myself and Anna.

I have been unable to limit the therapy so I have days off, but I do make sure that all therapy is done by noon--this gives Anna a chance to take a nap (and for me to get something done).

Don't sweat it if your house is a mess--it's really hard when you have little ones to keep things picked up. I found that the mess in the house bothered me the most when I first stayed home--I was used to a nice clean office where when I left something in one place it was there when I returned. I've learned to relax my standards.

I have a system for laundry that works for me. I like to have all the laundry done early in the week so that I don't have to do it every day (I like to pretend I've accomplished something). Each person has a laundry basket in their room. When it's full it gets washed altogether so that it can be folded all at once and taken back to the recipient's room. I don't have to sort through everyone's laundry that way. Usually with Anna's laundry I take it upstairs clean but unfolded and fold it and put it in the drawers at the same time. I also firmly believe that children need jobs. In our house, when you turn 10 you get a lesson on how the washer and dryer work and then are expected to do your own laundry. My older kids are fully responsible for their own clothes (although I have to remind my son to do it). To cut down on the number of towels to wash, you might want to assign a towel color to each family member so they can hang them up after they are used and then reuse their towels and know that no one else has used them.

Well that's all I can think of right now--didn't mean to write you a book (LOL).

Mary...great suggestions!!! I have to agree...the house cleaning used to get me down. Now, I clean twice a day...once during their nap...and once when they have gone to bed.

Trying to think of some cost saving tips from a newsgroup i used to help moderate -this came up all the time.

Make a permanent grocery list on your computer and then make a bunch of copies. Good through the cabinets and mark off what you need and only buy that at the grocery store, and try to go only once a week.

Every mom i know with 3+ kids does this eventually. Every night of the week is assigned a theme or specific dish. You could do mondays are Chicken, Tuesdays Italian, etc. Amzing how much time you can save if you know ahead of time the entire weeks meals.

Use the library as much as possible for not only books, but free storytimes, magazines, dvds etc

Join a babysitting co-op

Make your own cleaning supplies. Things like vineagar and water instead of windex. I am sure there are lots of different "recipes" on the web.

Don't for get about doing something for you and only you - I think a lot of SAHMs don't make this a priority, but it should be. Actually schedule it in, whether you are taking a class, or just going to a coffee shop to read People Magazine. Make sure you block out the time.

You'll love it!

Stephanie

I am with you on the bon bon idea! Very good.... I got a laugh out of that.

I have no advice to offer, I'm afraid.

But one small questions......what are PB&J?

Never heard of them this side of the big pond!

Good luck Stephanie with the transition.

Beat to the punch!!! Thanks Leah

Oh and awesome ideas so far....keep um' coming!

Thank you MAry, I like your laundry routine...I was gonna ask when people found the time to do laundry and clean. Cause right now you could swim through the sea of clothes sitting in our laundry room because I just can't get to them.

And the dinner list is perfect! Thanks Liz!

Ok, when you get WAY behind on laundry, a good quick fix is to sort it all by load and bring it to the laundry mat. It's sort of expensive (would usually cost me about $30 to do this) but you can get ALL OF IT DONE IN AN HOUR AND A HALF! Really, it makes you feel SO MUCH better to do this and have it all done. Then you can start fresh with a new routine. I used to do what Mary did, and it worked GREAT! Now there are only 3 of us in the house, I do all our laundry together, but fold it as it comes out of the dryer and it goes right into each person's basket.

However, we're moving to the "family closet" method. We're installing shelves and rods and stuff, and all the clothes will be put away in the laundry room, right by the machines. No more dragging it back upstairs, and it'll go from the dryer to "put away" in a second. Works fine when theres only 3 of us.

Stephanie,

I remember when you were worrying about going back to work, and I thought to myself... "Before you know it, she'll be back home!" I think you're going to LOVE it.

The people on this site are awesome. I am so glad you posted this, because it is so helpful to read all of the wonderful ideas that other SAHMs or any moms use to keep themselves sane.

I don't have much to add here. One thing I recently did was set up a check list for Stephen that has made my mornings nicer. It has thirteen items on it. Anything from turing off his nightlight... to showering/dressing... to kissing Mommy goodbye. We only use it on weekdays to get ready for school, and the only three "chores" that are on it are: Make your bed, Put dirty clothes in the hamper, and Do a quick pick-up in the playroom. Everything else is really to get himself ready for school, but he LOVES taking his pencil and checking off his own items, and at the end of the week, he gets $.25 for each day that he completes, and puts the $1.25 in his piggy bank. He is just at the point where he is beginning to read and count $$. So...it has worked wonderfully with him, and it has given him some sense of saving as well. Your girls are probably much too young for this (as is Sarah), and Joey is probably way beyond it, unless you can adapt it to tasks that he needs to get done in the morning or during the day. I think it would depend on the kid.

Another "list" that I have created for myself is my main shopping page. It seems that the three stores that I need to hit most frequently are grocery, Walmart or Target, and BJ's. So, on the computer I created one sheet of paper with those three lists on them. As things run out in the house, I add them to the appropriate list, and then when I am ready to go...I can cut away that portion of the page and off I go! It just helps me keep track of what needs to be bought WHERE...Prior to this, I used to have a grocery list and in the middle of groceries I'd write diapers & wipes...but then I'd skip over it while grocery shopping thinking to myself..."Oh, I'll pick those up at Walmart later, because they're so much cheaper." ...and then the list would get thrown away, and I'd forget to buy them.

As far as laundry goes...it's neverending! And now with # 3 coming...I'm in for it! I just try to do 1-2 loads per day so it doesn't get too backed up. I can't say that this ALWAYS happens, but when I can manage it, it just makes laundry a little more bearable.

I am not this organized, but I have a friend who divides her entire week up. Of course, her kids are both in school all day, and she's home, But she designates one major task per day i.e. Monday-change all sheets, Tuesday-floors, Wed.-dusting, etc. Right now, that could't work for me, but maybe someday I will be that organized!!!???

You're going to be great! Let us know how it's going!

Keep the great ideas coming, everyone!!! I'll keep checking back!

Watch out! This might be a BOOK!
I have been a stay at home Mom for 4 1/2 years. It was easy when I only had Cameron but then Kendallcame 2 1/2 years later, and Kennedy 13 months after that.
We didn't have much of a struvtured schedule when I only had 2 children and then Kennedy came and therapies started etc.
Here is my day........I am up between 6 and 6:30. I get up and check my Ebay first, check my email, etc to see exactly what I am looking at each day, packages to mail, questions to answer, etc. Then into the shower. Get Cameron up at 7, unless he is alrady awake. He gets breakfast at 7:15, then dressed, teeth brushed, etc and on the bus at 7:45. The girls eat when I am getting him ready for school. I get all of his things ready the night before. Clothing gets picked out, lunch gets packed, anything that needs to be sent to school all goes in his backpack. I make his sandwich in the morning though. Once he gets on the bus and the girls finish breakfast, we immediately get them dressed and ready for therapy for Kennedy. She has therapy 3 days a week at 8:30. I also tidy up the house quickly before the therapist arrives. Two days a week I have therapies 2 times in the morning so between therapy I get all of my Ebay stuff packed up and ready for the mailman. After therapy it is girls time until Kennedy takes a nap. Then I list on Ebay, clean the house up, do 2 loads of laundry and Kendall and I fit a board game or 2 in. Cameron is off the bus at 2 pm. Snack, some TV, we spend some time together and then time for Dinner. Rod gets home at 5:30 or 6 and we eat as soon as he walks in the door. Bathtime is 7. We then play a game together as a family or read a couple of books and bedtime is 8pm sharp!
I do my errand running on Rod's days off or we leave right after Cameron gets on the bus on days we don't have therapy. I keep Monday's and Thursday's free. But have to be sure to work around Kennedy's naptime at noon. She needs her naps.
As for pinching your pennies. I only shop clearance. ONLY! I buy all of the kids clothing a season ahead when it is 75% off. I only shop the clearance racks and if I find something, great, if not, next time. If I happen to have the wrong size, etc ijust resell it n Ebay the next year. I do my grcery shopping at Aldi. Gosh, it soooooo cheap and most of their food is just as good as name brands but at a fraction of the cost. I get meat and that kind of stuff at the regular grocery store but only buy what is on sale and that is what we eat. But I always buy in bulk and separate and put in the freezer. If it is not n sale, we don't eat it. I know, I am such a cheapskate but we save tons of money this way.
I also shop only the clearance because I sell on Ebay to make extra income for our family and I feel as though I am contributing in some way.
THe kids also love to help me do the laundry, dishes, etc and this helps with time as well.
Oh, I also get all of the kids Christmas shopping done right after Christmas. The stores are always putting toys on clearance right after Christmas to make room for Spring items or the next holiday. So I stock up for the kids and I also have a closet full of things for upcoming Kids birthdays, christmas presents, etc.
And my most favorite website is Disney. They always have really great deals and I get free shipping and 10% off every order because I am a platinum member. Which means I spend over 1000.00 a year with them. Most of it I sell on Ebay but Ialso kee a lot of things for the kids and what I make on Ebay pays for it. Okay, enough already! I have therapy now but if Ithink of anything else I will be sure to post again!

Oh and another thing with laundry. I do at least one load a day, I swear I just don't know how we wear so many clothes. BUT I get so behind sometimes, with all the laundry washed and dried and then it just sits in the basket for days, so I MAKE myself fold it as soon as it comes out of the dryer. Each load, and even if I fold it and it sits on top the dryer for 4 days, at LEAST it's folded and not so wrinkly and I don't get as behind. Another thing I've been doing is, instead of trying to clean the entire house in one day, which is enough to kill a cow, I do the bathrooms one day, the floors another, dust another, scrub the kitchen and clean that one day, and just divide it all up. It kills me to spend one whole day cleaning the whole house and then the kids destroy it in one hour, so if I do certain rooms, it isn't so overwhelming.

Stephanie, if you haven't checked out http://www.flylady.com yet, you should. Their theory is that you do things in 15 minute increments and you use a timer/ So say you are going to pick up your downstairs, you set the timer for 15 minutes and you see how much you get done in that time. If you finish everything, great. If you want to do more at the end of the 15 minutes, even better. But if you've had enough, you can stop at the end of the 15 minutes guilt free. It's amazing how much you can get done in 15 minutes if you set your mind to it. Even better if you can enlist the troops to help you. The website also has great recipes that my kids actually like.

I also feel as a a SAHM that the one thing that is lacking is a sense of accomplishment. So I play little mind games--get all the laundry in the house clean byy Tuesday and I've got laundry done for the week. Plan my meals and do one big grocery shopping once a week, and it's done. I do very little in the way of errands because I just don't have time for them and I've found that most of them don't need to be done, plus it seems like you are running around and at the end of the day nothing is accomplished.

Okay my savings tip is...... coupons. I am a big coupon user and I used to use http://www.thegrocerygame.com but then a friend sent me http://www.couponmom.com and the best part it is free unlike the other which was $15 for 8 weeks. You do have to get the sunday paper but will save so much with it.

The idea is to buy at the right time for the right price (like Kennedy's mom was saying). Which sometimes is free. If you need help with it just let me know.

Also with two daughters in therapy it is hard and up until this month I had Fridays with no therapy but then my daughter has speech group that day so we are trying to change other around so that although Faith will still have therapy I won't have to get out of the house that day. So if at all possible try to have at least one day with no therapy.

If I think of anything else I will let you know. Just have to add that if I wasn't here so much I would get a lot done. LOL
