Any one has a great trick to elevate constipation? I know I could call the doctor but I was just wondering what you guys thought. Anthony needs his formula thicken to honey thick so that he dose not aspirate so we use rice cereal. Anthony gets a ton of iron in his formula and the cereal. Could it be iron that is causing the problem? His BM’s have always been a bit on the firm side but just in the last few days he has had BM’s that take a more work for him to get out and we are getting several pea sized BM’s in his diaper. Plus, his little baby bottom is getting red. I have been using cream to help his bottom and it seams to help a bunch. I have tried giving him prune juice in his formula and it seams to help a little. Now his poops are black. Any one got any other good remedies? Maybe I should be worried about something else going on. Should I be worried?
Bonnie

Hi Bonnie-I will try to be of some help as my oldest son had major issues.

I jsut remember the screaming and crying, and on the phone with the ER telling me to give hi prune juice. Well of course we all know that but it was not working. He would go like once a week. It was awful....and yes the small ones is showing he is constipated, and the IRON is a huge part.

If you can introduce pear juice...this helped and a bit more enjoyable for them. The laxatives for baby work really well for a few times but my son began a bit dependent on them. I hope you get help soon...I knw and remember how frustrating it can be. Matthew is eating a lot more food now, and I have noticed it firming up too. But that little stinker will only poo when I change him.... Guess he is more relaxed....

I think he might be too little for juices yet. (he's not 4 months yet is he?) Usually Miralax or Ducolax in the formula will work. It's by prescription from your ped. Has he pooped fine up until now? Just making sure because of the high incidence of Hirschsprung Disease in our kids.

Sorry your liitle guy is having a rough time. Can you use Thick It or something besides rice cereal? I don't think that thick it has added iron.

We have added flax oil and ground flax seeds to Eliza's rice cereal (oh and we use a brown rice cereal for extra fiber) from the beginning to help her poop. She used to go once a week adn it was a big deal! Now we have her to once a day or two. I also would give her 1-2oz of prune juice a day with her bottle. My doctor suggested mineral oil and the glycerin suppositories when it got bad. I would start taking her temp anally with lots of A+D to start stimulating and then do a glycerin suppository if 5-7 days passed. They can get addicted to those so i don't use them any more. Just lots of prunes and flax every day. Her dr. said when she is older she will probably need miralax which is not addictive and i know lots of kids here use. He personally has never given it to a kid under 1 so he wanted to wait a bit. Good luck!

My daughter was only constipated for a couple of weeks at around two months old. We tried Miralax but it was too much on her stomach. We stopped using just rice cereal and moved to a combination of Thick It and rice cereal. The problem of constipation ended a few days later. My little girl cannot tolerate any juice, of any kind, not even diluted it runs straight through her. Most nutritionists will tell you that juice is of no value to the body really anyway because it is just empty calories and loads of raw sugar.

You can get Thick It or any number of similar thickeners from your pharmacy over the counter. Our pharmacy and the one we used to have in Iowa gave us the wholesale rate because we also get all our medications there as well. In the beginning a big can lasted quite a while, but now we go through 3 or 4 a month. If you pharmacy does not carry it you can tell them it is available through McKesson-that is a major pharm supplier.

The product is simply just modified corn starch and it works really well in less quantity than rice cereal. There are easy directions on the can, but to get the right consistancy when using rice cereal as well may take a bit of trial and error. Elainah just stopped using rice cereal in December and is now just on thickener. So, yes, rice cereal for 17 months.

Max also has a problem drinking his formula and what helps him is for the formula to be thick. The hospital use simply thick. They have a website http://www.simplythick.com
he uses the nectar kind. Also this can be use in juice, water etc. is taste less.
Hope this helps.

Love
Alex

I was using Simply Thick for my breast milk so I know that product. I am concerned about using Thick it because if I leave a bottle in the frig then the milk will turn rock hard (or almost). Also, I thought Thick It is a corn based product and can cause children to have firmer than normal BM's so I was worried about that. Since I left my first message I have been alternating bottles mixed with Simply thick and bottles of mixed with bottles thickened with rice cereal. This seams to be working better. Anthony stools are firm but I am not getting the pea sized poops and his poop seams less of an effort to get out. Maybe I found the right combination for now. I just wanted to avoid using Simply Thick because it is more expensive but it seams to be working well. I just went back on line to order more because I was almost out. Thanks for all the replies.

You can usually get the thickens like Simply thick covered by your insurance if the doctor writes a script for it.

Both of my little ones have simply think because they asperate. Their insurance does cover it. Dr writes the script and I get it from the medical supply. They will deliver it to your door.

I am sure Thick It is less expensive. Every time I make a bottle with Simply Thick it is .81 cents. Then when you add shipping and handling charges it makes each bottle cost about 1.24 a bottle. Then I need to add formula. Alex I will post here as soon as I learn about my insurance coverage. We have good insurance. I would think they would cover something like this. I just never thought of it before. (Thank again Leah)

Hello, I have to say that I have been there. Just this week actually. Elijah's ped. told me to give him an ounce of pear juice a day. It helped a lot but on one particular day he cried and cried because it was hurting so bad. So my mom (who seems to know ALL of the remedies!!) suggested using corn syrup and water. In about an ounce of water put about 5-6 drops of the syrup in and mix it up. Well, lets just say that he was relieved in about an hour. And he didn't even cry through it! I'm sure it's not good to use all the time, but when the occasion presents itself, I definately suggest it. The pear juice seems to keep him regular.

I've used the corn syrup in warm water too.It really does the trick to relieve them, when they are so miserable. It does work really fast.

Sammy also has a problem with constipation and is using Mirolax, but we did use the corn syrup method with him as well. Our pediatrician told us to be sure to use the DARK syrup... 2 teaspoons in 2 ounces of lukewarm water. It did seem to help.

Good luck!

We use Karo Syrup for Madison and that seems to help. The dark kind. She still has problems and her stool is generally on the harder side, only since her heart surgery and introduction of baby food. Hopefully you will find something that helps.

flax seed oil (a teaspoon a day when he was little) and pear or prune juice helped with Callum. We also avoided rice cereal and bananas.

Aspiration and Consipation

hi there,
Sean is 14 months and aspirates and I use Carabel Thickner which is on the Irish market. He had a bowel blockage when he was born premature, so although he had the bowel fixed, he still gets very consipated. I use Dupalec which is a poo softener and he goes nearly every day now, Usually I give hime 10 mils but if its anyway hard, 15 mils, I try to avoid supositorys, but Sean eats a regular diet now although he wont drink juice for me, Apple maybe if Im lucky, thickened of course. I dread the warm weather but he is still on formula so he drinks three bottles a day which the dietician says is perfect. When your babe gets to six months, you can try the baby yogurts, mango, apricot etc used to make Sean go thickened of course.Anything with fibre, Do you have ready brek over there, for breakfast cereal. Flax definately and when at six months, Pure bran ground to nothing in your health food shop mixed with babes formula.
Any ideas for juices, its reflux... horrible, Water will come straight back no matter how much its thickened.
