Hello everyone. I'm Gregg, the father (and father-in-law) of Mariachi (Elisa and Luis) and of course Natalie's grand-father.

Natalie's back in the hospital. She had a bad cough, went to the doctor and he treated the cough, x-rayed her heart looking for fluid build up but didn't see anything alarming. They took her to the emergency room Thursday morning because of a non-stop cough and she was admitted. Her oxygen saturation levels were about 50% at the time and with oxygen came back into the high 90's. She was weaned off the oxygen last night but her levels dropped into the 80's so she's back on it now.

They just did a test for RSV and it came back positive.

I know there's a wealth of knowledge here. Believe me, it sure helped coming here before Natalie had her heart surgery. I've read up on RSV and can only find vague references to the possibilities of it being serious in children with heart problems. Does anyone here have experiences with RSV especially immediately after heart surgery?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Gregg

We didn't have any problems after heart surgery, so can't help you there. Just wanted to offer out a prayer for a super quick recovery for Natalie!

Yes, RSV is nasty business. It's a bad cold to most people. However for children who are premies, and have repiratory issues it's very serious. I know some kiddos with DS who have a bout of RSV...are in the hospital about a week then go home. Others have stayed closer to a month on a ventilator. Our doctor lobbied our insurance to pay for synagis a RSV vaccine...but it's hard to get children approved unless they were 5 weeks premature. Austin was only 3 weeks early...but he had open heart surgery at a week old and lacks a pulmonary valve. So the cardio and ped thought it was significant enough a risk to fight for it. Having said that ...it's kinda like a flu shot. Won't really prevent RSV, just supposed to make it easier to recover from. I'll sure keep miss natalie in our prayers. Please keep us updated!!
THanks for posting.

Thanks for the thoughts, prayers and insight. I thought it was strange because Natalie has been getting the vaccine. As a matter of fact she just had a shot within the last week. That's the first I heard of it not preventing it just making it a little easier to recover from. That seems to be the case here. She seems to be doing somewhat better this afternoon so hopefully that shot or series of shots was worth something.

For what it's worth, it seems the Resident at the hospital missed the initial diagnosis of RSV. Natalie's Ped got involved...got the required test ordered then read the Resident the riot act.

Thanks again. Ya'll are awesome.

Gregg

I am so relieved to hear that she had the vaccine. Most of our little ones do not get approved. They should be. I'm sure Miss NAtalie will be home soon. Give her a kiss from us.

My oldest had it at 19 mos and it was indeed "nasty business". It took forever it seems for her to get over it. SHe was on a nebulizer every two or three hours. It helped momentarily, but quickly faded. It seemed that she just had to suffer through it somewhat. We did all the typical stuff at home...raising one side of the crib, humidifier-cool-mist, scented oils, etc. not much helped though. We seemed to be in and out of the doctors office for a couple of weeks. She was pretty miserable as were we all! The worst part was that She just didn't seem to get enough air. She was weazing and coughing a LOT! After that she was diagnosed with Asthma for about a year and now she seems much better. Although she gets bronchitis fairly easily now. She has never had a problem with asthma since though! Hang in there Natalie...we're pulling for you little girl!

Grace receives the Synagis shots, and my pediatrician also said it was still possible for her to get RSV, just less likely. Hope Natalie's recovery is quick.

OH NO! I hope she is feeling better very soon! Hunter has not had any heart problems/surgery, but he had RSV this season. Thankfully he never needed to be admitted to the hospital(but we were at the dr's every week for check-ups). He was on nebulizer treatments for almost 3 months. He also developed croupe in the middle of all that.

Sam was in the hospital for 4 days at the end of January with RSV pneumonia. He never had any heart problems/surgeries but was pretty sick. Thankfully, he recovered pretty quickly. We did nebulizer treatments for a few days after he was discharged but he then quickly recovered and doesn't seem to have any residual respiratory issues. Hope Natalie's home soon. That's great she had the vaccine- hopefully she'll be better in no time.

RSV and Synergies

Hi there Natalies dad, if you go to http://www.rsvinfo.com, there is lots of info that may help, god love her.My babe, Sean is 14 months and he was premature 8 weeks + so he also gets the RSV synergies inhection throughout the winter months, they actually can do a profile in your local hospital on RSV. So far he hasnt even had a snuffle with this injection he is due his last one in April ( one a month)since Sept. Sean has no heart probs. There are guidelines to follow when children get this injection, keep the child away from public areas, shopping malls, etc, avoid large family gatherings i.e. infection. we have done all these things and it has worked, Sean is the only one of 30 prem babes who hasnt had a spell with pneomenia this winter. Ask you GP for information on it. Best of luck with Natalie, hope all goes well, keep her warm.

Natalie came home from the hospital yesterday. Thanks for the info and thoughts everyone. She came back with a nebulizer so hopefully that's the last we'll see of that hospital for awhile.

We now know more about RSV than I thought imaginable and we're doing our best to share that info with friends.

Thanks again...
